The Importance of Foot Care

treating client in clinicDid you know that the average person will walk enough during their lifetime to have completed four full trips around the earth? We rely on our mobility every day so it is imperative to maintain good podiatric health, especially as we begin to age. It makes sense that seniors have more issues with foot health than younger people, simply because they have used them longer.

Foot pain can be caused by a number of things such as:

  • Disease
  • Nerve disorders
  • Circulatory disorders
  • Injuries
  • Athletic overuse
  • Arthritic conditions

There are many difficulties that seniors face and foot care is one of them. As many as 71% of seniors over the age of 65 have some sort of foot pain, either constant or reoccurring. Unfortunately only about a third of seniors with foot pain will report it to their doctor or caregiver. It can be dangerous to neglect foot health as you age because it can reduce quality of life, mobility, balance and independence.

Women are four times more likely to develop foot problems, likely due to unsupportive footwear such as sandals and high heels.

It is recommended that seniors regularly maintain their feet by:

  • Cleaning and grooming often
  • Checking for painful areas
  • Being mindful of any aches or pains
  • Using mild soaps and moisturizers to reduce cracking skin
  • Stretching and massaging the muscles in the lower legs, calves and feet
  • Wearing appropriate, supportive footwear

It can be difficult for seniors to maintain their feet in this way because of reduced flexibility, forgetfulness or other impairment. Many caregivers will not offer foot care as a service but Safe Care Home Support offers convenient mobile foot care services for seniors!
