Time: Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Start Date: Thursday, July 10, 2025
Why Green Care Works: Research-Based Benefits for Dementia
Green Care programs—also known as therapeutic farms or nature-based dementia day programs—have been widely adopted in Europe and are gaining momentum in Canada as innovative, person-centered models of care.
Research highlights the following benefits for individuals living with dementia:
Cognitive stimulation through exposure to nature, creative tasks, and familiar activities
Improved mood and reduced depression through sunlight, fresh air, and movement (Gonzalez et al., 2010)
Reduced agitation and anxiety (Whear et al., 2014)
Better balance and physical health through outdoor movement and guided exercise (Bird, 2007)
Stronger social engagement and inclusion through shared gardening, art, and animal care
These outcomes align with the goals of our Adult Cognitive Wellness Program (ACWP), where we focus on maintaining dignity, promoting independence, and supporting caregivers through holistic dementia care.
What to Expect Each Week
Every Thursday, participants will enjoy a joyful, therapeutic experience in nature guided by Recreation Therapy staff and volunteers, including:
Gardening and sensory planting (lavender, rosemary, basil, etc.)
Creative arts & nature-based crafts
Cognitive games and brain-boosting activities
Animal interaction and farm visits
Chair yoga or light outdoor movement
Group lunch and mindful reflection
This program is not just about activity—it’s about connection, contribution, and community. Participants have a voice in shaping each session, choosing what brings them peace and joy.
A Shared Vision: The Village Leads the Way
The idea to bring a Green Care Farm Day Program to British Columbia originated from the inspiring vision of The Village Langley—a community built on values of inclusion, dignity, and innovation in dementia care.
We are honoured to partner with The Village to help make that vision a reality. Their openness to welcoming the broader community and their commitment to reimagining senior living made it possible to launch this unique outdoor program right here in Langley.
We are grateful to The Village for leading the way and inviting us to be part of this meaningful initiative.
Rooted in the Adult Cognitive Wellness Program (ACWP)
The Green Care Farm Day Program is a natural extension of our established Adult Cognitive Wellness Program (ACWP), now active in Coquitlam, Burnaby, Langley, Port Coquitlam, and Victoria.
ACWP uses a Montessori-based, holistic model to promote:
- Cognitive stimulation and memory support
- Emotional regulation and well-being
- Physical activity and sensory engagement
- Creative expression through music, movement, and arts
- Respite and education for family caregivers
Now, with Green Care, we’re taking our mission outdoors—where healing, joy, and empowerment grow naturally.
