Tips for Seniors During Summer

The hottest days of the year have already approached the Lower Mainland. While we love the Summer heat, there are precautions we need to take to stay healthy and safe in the hot weather.

Some tips Safe Care Home Support came up with are:

  • Eat lightly and drink plenty of fluids. Non-caffeine and non-alcoholic beverages help prevent dehydration. We recommend water, fruit-infused water, and iced tea
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing
  • Schedule outside activities before noon or in the evening
  • Keep shades drawn and blinds closed, but keep windows slightly open
  • If you don’t have access to air conditioning, spend a few hours at the library, movie theatre, mall, or restaurant that has air conditioning to stay cool
  • Wear a broad-brimmed hat, wraparound glasses with 99 percent ultra-violet (UV) absorption, and at least 30 SPF sunscreen
  • Stay cool by taking a cool bath or shower to lower your body temperature
  • Always carry water with you, no matter where you go
  • If you need to exercise, do it in the early hours of the day when it is cool, and drink lots of water before you begin
  • Avoid overcrowded places, as they can quickly increase body heat

Symptoms of Heat-Related Illnesses

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Extreme Fatigue
  • Muscle Spasms
